FAQ's

  • 1. What is an NDIS Participant?

An NDIS Participant is a person with a disability eligible to access the NDIS.

  • 2. What supports and services can the NDIS Fund?

The NDIS can fund a range of supports and services which may include education, employment, social participation, building independence, living arrangements and health and wellbeing.

These supports and services must be considered reasonable and necessary.

  • 3. What is reasonable and necessary?

To be considered reasonable and necessary, a support or service:

    • Must be related to a NDIS Participants disability
    • Must not include day to day living costs that do not relate to the disability support needs (for example – groceries)
    • Should represent value for money
    • Must be likely to be effective and work for the NDIS Participant, and
    • Should take into account support given by other government services, family, carers, networks and the community.

Examples of supports that may be approved include:

  • 4. What is an NDIS Plan?

Once you’re an NDIS Participant the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will work with you to create your NDIS Plan. The Plan sets out your goals and the supports that help you pursue those goals. The NDIS Plan is created based on your disability care needs, and will include information about your goals, the NDIS Supports that will be funded, how you can use your NDIS funding and who will manage your funding.

  • 5. What are Plan Managed and Self-Managed NDIS Participants?

    Plan Managed

You may choose to pay someone to help manage your NDIS funds and pay invoices. The NDIS will add extra funds into your NDIS Plan to cover the cost of a Plan Manager. If you choose this option, then you are a ‘Plan Managed NDIS Participant’.

Action Your Ability Support Services can help you connect with Plan Managers.

    Self-Managed

Self-managed is when you manage your NDIS funds yourself (including with help from your family / carers). You, or your family, will purchase services and supports, manage your NDIS budget, claim and pay for supports and keep invoices and receipts.

If you choose this option, you are a ‘Self-Managed NDIS Participant’.
